Worrying... [Apr. 2nd, 2006|10:06 am]
[mood | confused]

Does this actually mean what it appears to mean?

"Putting a false-moral veneer over socialism doesn't make it less wrong"

I'm deeply troubled by such a statement. Is this the thinking of an open minded adult in modern times?

I believe that everyone is entitled to "human dignity" if nothing else and if that puts a "socialist" label on me - I welcome it. Socialism is not "wrong". Bombing a country and killing innocent civilians and children for money and oil right is "wrong". Funding african militant groups and supplying them with arms is "wrong". Democracy and Capitalism (in these times polite ways of saying plutocracy) are no more right than any other means of government or idealistic viewpoint.

I have separated this out to both highlight my concern and avoid going waaaay off topic in the above thread.

Are people really still taught that socialism is "wrong"?

Writing [Mar. 27th, 2006|04:09 pm]
[mood | good]

Hey folks - I want prompt phrases or prompt words for things to write.
I'm kind of testing my resolve with this. I want to write. I want to know I am commited to writing. For each prompt I get - I will write something within a week. Length will depend on time and the number of responses - the first each week will be a decent length.

Thanks to the person who "prompted" this idea - you know who you are... *grin*

Buffy Season 6 is about love. No wonder it is so dark. I went home at lunch time to watch the last episode (which I had never seen before)...
Sheesh. I feel like I've been hit in the heart!

I'm on holiday in 2 weeks now. 16 days till I jet off to the US and get to meet the family.
All will be good but that doesn't make me any less nervous. I can't decide if it doesn't matter what they think (which would be nice and relaxing and more in keeping with how I see the world) or if I really REALLY need them all to think I'm great (which of course would be a nightmare and a very bad thing as I would be bound to tense up and act like a complete idiot).

Flying for 6 hours is going to be a buzz! I'm wetting myself already!

Time management takes an awful lot of time? I don't know if it is worth it at the moment but I'm going to stick to it and see how it goes!

I Am A: Chaotic Good Half-OrcFighter Paladin

Alignment:
Chaotic Good characters are independent types with a strong belief in the value of goodness. They have little use for governments and other forces of order, and will generally do their own things, without heed to such groups.

Race:
Half-Orcs are a cross between a human and an orc. Generally, this kind of mating does not occur willingly, so half-orcs are almost never raised by a full set of parents. They tend to be less intelligent and attractive than humans, but are generally stronger and hardier. Violence is a part of their nature, and few half-orcs manage to overcome this to follow other professions. They are generally treated with disdain by other races, if not outright hostility.

Primary Class:
Fighters are the warriors. They use weapons to accomplish their goals. This isn't to say that they aren't intelligent, but that they do, in fact, believe that violence is frequently the answer.

Secondary Class:
Paladins are the Holy Warriors. They have been chosen by a God/dess to be their representative on Earth, and must follow the code of that deity, or risk severe penalties. They tend towards being righteous, but not generally to excess.

Deity:
Tymora is the Chaotic Good goddess of luck and good fortune. She is also known as Lady Luck, and also Tyche's fair-tressed daughter. Followers of Tymora believe in the tenent that, 'Fortune Favors the Bold,' and will throw caution to the wind and trust to luck to work things out for the best. Tymora's symbol is an unmarked silver disk.

Hmmm [Oct. 10th, 2005|10:18 am]
See... I would have said that I had an OK childhood.
Could have been worse.
Ten again - galss is half full... (Half full of what though)

Very Difficult
Your life has been 50% difficult.

Based on your family, money, political context, and personal situation -- during the important years of your development -- it appears your life was VERY DIFFICULT. What does this mean?

Well, the "difficulty" of your life is a measure of how rough you had it. Relative to the world, you had a very, very difficult childhood. I'm not sure what "success" means to you, but whatever it is, you can achieve it. When you do, it'll be that much more impressive.

4. I'll say something that only makes sense to you and me. (This possibly will not apply to all).
5. I'll tell you my first memory of you.
6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of.
7. I'll ask you something that I've always wondered about you.
8. If I do this for you, you must post this on your journal. You MUST. It is written.

Modern, Cool Nerd
86 % Nerd, 56% Geek, 13% Dork
For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd.

Nerds didn't use to be cool, but in the 90's that all changed. It used to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world that you couldn't quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and geeky have eked out for themselves a modicum of respect at the very least, and "geek is chic." The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent, knowledgable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). They are the one you want as your lifeline in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (or the one up there, winning the million bucks)!

Congratulations!

[music |Deee lite - Groove is in the heart (why!?)]

Ok - I just have to say something here...

This whole thing about the "inserted" scene in GTA:San Andreas. Could someone please sit down with Ms. Clinton and all the other politic-ers and explain exactly what a game hack is...? It's a program available on the internet that if used in certian way with a game allows the user to view something not intended by the game designers to be viewed.
If it is not intended to be viewed because it was cut to meet a censorship rating requirement - so be it. A similar comparison would be if a scene is cut from a film because it is too graphic to meet censorship allowances - the film is not utterly destroyed for all time, it is almost inevitably archived / left "on the cutting room floor" and quite often appears on the internet later. Exhibit 1: (I don't know if it is in the film or was cut) see this link (don't click on this unless in a safe place for viewing pseudo-porn) for a waaaay too graphic sex scene for kids to have access to - this - thanks ladykhisainth for the refferal. Now there are no security / net-nanny / credit card restrictions on this and it is quite simple to download if you understand the basics of HTML and can find the movie URL from the page source. This shows real people having full blown sex - Hilary Clinton is not freaking out about this though... Because it is not a good hobby horse - instead we focus on the game which parents may already know is in their house to play on their fears!
Just because your kid has San andreas does not mean he knows how to hack it... I know 10 people who have hacked GTA since reading about it on the news however! I'd guess sales of the game have skyrocketed!

I have great regard for Ms. clinton and I have no problem with censors giving age restrictions on games (despite my dislike of censorship in general) but I really think there are more important things in the world and more pressing issues than whether or not kids can hack a computer game to see cartoon / graphical characters doing what they can see done every day of the week on the web. If the kids want to see s3x / pr0n / whatever they want - all they have to do is download it from the net. It's not rocket science.

I especially have a problem with the timing of this. Of all the issues she can make a stand on - this distorted little "family values" storm in a teacup is the one she chooses. When suicide bombers are killing people in London, people are dying every day in Palestine and Israel, world leaders are meeting to discuss issues crucial to the entire world at the G8 summit and people the world over are joining with celebrities to plead for an end to poverty and starvation - Hilary Clinton's big publicity issue is about a computer game!

For Shame!

Ok - rant over...

I've been tagged by [info]rainbowsaredumb!

List 5 reasons you are a dork. And make them good reasons. Justify them. Explain them. Be loud and proud of how big a dork you are! Then pick the 5 biggest dorks you know and have them do the meme.

1) I'm still at work at 7:30PM working on updates While the bosses are away and updating the games club (see No. 3) website.

2) In a company full of nerds and programmers - they come to me to ask if something will work. (Why?)

3) I'm in a games club (RPGs, Board Games, CCGs etc). (Which as per 1 above - I do the web site for...)

4) I don't want to use a pre-written blog / messageboard / guestbook so I am writing my own. (Again - WHY?)

5) I used to take beers / spirits into the computer labs with me while I was in college because I didn't want to get a late start drinking but I really needed to finish a project at 10 O'Clock at night! (Plus coding slightly drunk is fun!)

I don't really know if these things make me a dork so much as a nerd but who cares *grin* what's the difference really?

Added a memory today, first time I've run into a post here that grabbed my attention quite so thoroughly! Going to link it here as well 'cos I think it's a) Entertaining, b) Insightful and c) Informative.
Even if it's not 100% accurate (not for me to question) or 100% impartial - it's worth a read for a giggle and a window on the world from someone else's viewpoint.

You are more introverted than extroverted. You are more intuitive than observant, you are more feeling based than thinking based, and you prefer to go with the flow rather than having a plan. Your type can best be summarized by the word "Healer", which belongs to the larger group of idealists. You have a capacity for caring that is deeper than most. You strive for unity, are fascinated by the battles between good and evil, and can be something of an idealist. Only 1% of the population shares your type.
As a romantic partner, you are usually supprtive and nuturing, however, you have a high need for individuality. Harmony is extremely important to you as you are very affected by conflict and tension, which also makes you resist confronting your partner directly about problems. When you get angry, you usually blame yourself, rather than your partner. You can also be stubborn and unyielding when you feel you are being criticized or mistreated. You feel the most appreciated when your partner listens to you carefully. You need to be understood. You need to hear your partner express their feelings, the more often, the better. Your group summary: idealists (NF)
Your type summary: INFP
